USA Baseball or USSSA — which does my youth player need?

Recreational leagues like Little League, Babe Ruth, and Cal Ripken require USA Baseball certified bats. Travel and select ball, including USSSA tournaments and Perfect Game events, requires USSSA-certified bats. The two are not interchangeable — a USSSA bat is not legal in a USA-standard rec league. How do I size a bat for a younger player?

Size by height and weight rather than age. A quick field check: have the player hold the bat by the knob with one arm extended straight out to the side — if they can hold it steady for several seconds without the barrel dropping, the weight is manageable. Most 7U–10U players land in a 27"–29" length with a -10 to -12 drop.
